Tokoname, with its unbroken 1300-year history, is the largest production area among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.
This piece comes from an area so famous for its redware teapots that it earned the saying “if you’re drinking tea, you have to go with Tokoname.”
Tokoname teapots are characterized by their fine grain and a plain, robust feel, a result of iron components contained in the soil melting in the kiln. These iron components also help to remove the astringency in the tea, producing a smooth, mild flavor. As a result, with the spread of green tea, the teapots became cherished throughout Japan.
The craftsmanship that goes into even the smallest details is superb, from a construction that makes it difficult to feel the weight of the water, to the quality of the pour, which delivers even the very last drop of tea — said to be the tastiest.
It will surely change the way you enjoy your tea. |Karatsu ware is characterized by its rustic appearance and a texture reminiscent of the warmth of the earth.
