Satsuma Kiriko Collection

Satsuma-kiriko cut glass is a type of Japanese glass craft originally developed in the 1800s in Satsuma province for international trade. It is made by layering glass of various colors, including red, navy, purple, green and yellow, and cutting patterns with a grinder and a diamond-tipped tool.
The production of the unique gradient glass called “Bokashi” that glows mystically as the light passes through requires carefully controlled depth of cut into the surface of thick color glass.
Once the glass is polished multiple times using various different materials, such as rubber, wood and a brush, each cutting pattern on the surface starts to look radiant and emit soft glow.
The vivid colors were developed in Satsuma province with the original method of mixing glass with minerals.
We offer a variety of Satsuma kiriko glassware, including “Bokashi” glassware that is unique to Satsuma-kiriko, layered color glass vessels and glasses with great hues.
